EXQUISITE FUTURES

OPEN CALL

CLOSED

Only a month ago Revolv hosted a zine workshop open to the public at Seen Fifteen, Peckham where for an afternoon we made collages out of photocopied images with a group of strangers.

Since we don’t know when our next event might take place, we are calling all artists, photographers and students to create a collage which describes /interprets /reinvents /challenges the current surreal situation the world is experiencing as a result of the spread of the virus Covid-19. All selected submissions will be featured in a digital zine, which will be printed in a limited edition in the foreseeable future.

Surrealist collage first appeared over a hundred year ago in response to the atrocities taking place throughout Europe around the First World War. Collages were made mostly from odd combinations of cut outs from found magazine or newspaper images, making a comment on societal issues such as gender inequality in employment for instance, as challenged by Hannah Hoch’s collage Beautiful Girl. Can this method of work become a tool to deal with the situation we are currently finding ourselves in -  be it in isolation, quarantine, working from home, not working, fighting the virus, not seeing family or friends; and can it bring some normality to our daily life, currently spent mostly indoors?

Revolv invites artists to perform an act of reappropriation and reimagination of our present, past or future, in a personal or national sense, perhaps considering how this could have been prevented, or imagining how the world might change in the future as a result of this crisis.

The idea is to use existing material which is already available to hand - personal images, found photos, varied sources, magazine cut outs, leaflets, receipts, or any other printed matter. We encourage collages to be made physically, by hand, considering touch, scale, surface and material. The file/s which you send can be a scan or a photograph of your collage.
