HOMELAND

JULY 2019
TAKE COURAGE GALLERY

The publication launch of Homeland was a celebration of a shared sense of belonging in relation to places, spaces, cultures and history. The gallery space, a previous place of residence, became the collective’s home, with objects belonging to the featured artists curated in the space. The public was invited to experience the publication and to a discussion between guest artists of the publication, Dafna Talmour and Martin Seeds.

The publication Homeland encapsulates a collection of experiences in relation to personal and collective connotations of the word. By formulating private, political and historical narratives, the artists reflect on the roots and routes which shape both individuals and nations. When the home is ruptured, existing in a distant time or simply reimagined, one not only begins to seek a fabricated substitute, but hints of it come to surface in the everyday. The use of vernacular and archival materials reveal the constructed nature of collective memory, whilst photography plays a central role in reinforcing a form of belonging. The physical impact on the land by the ancestors forms a wider history of mark-making and orientation to a landscape, preserved through lived and imaginary narratives.
