TECTONICS

9 NOVEMBER 2020
ONLINE WORKSHOP

Facilitated by Victoria Louise Doyle and Laura Bivolaru

The Tectonics online zine-making workshop was conceived at the invitation of Minna Pöllännen to be delivered to a group of 30 students as part of the Professional Practice unit at BA Photography UCA Farnham. In preparation, the students were asked to print visual material (either their own or others’) and to acquire a number of basic tools. The university provided sheets of paper.

During this workshop, the students explored the concept of the zine-as-site. They learned a concise history of the zine format, with a focus on contemporary appropriations. This presentation led to a series of exercises designed to expand upon and develop their understanding of the zine and its potential as a site. In the second part of the workshop, the students learned how to produce a self-binding zine with poster and a panel zine, which they populated with their own material at the end of the session. After the workshop, the students had access for a month to a Google Drive folder that contained videos of relevant zines and publications from the facilitators’ personal archives, as well as how-to recordings of the two zine formats they produced.
